Application & Licensure
The Opticians of Manitoba (OOM) regulates the profession of Opticianry in Manitoba and licenses Opticians.
All Licensed Opticians and Contact Lens Licensed Opticians must be registered and licensed by OOM to legally practice in Manitoba. They must meet basic educational requirements and pass the exam(s) related to the dispensing of eyeglasses and/or the fitting of contact lenses. They must also keep their knowledge and skills current through continuing education, formally titled Maintenance of Competency.
The Opticians of Manitoba (OOM) registers and licenses Opticians in the following categories:
- Licensed Optician
May dispense, fit and adjust eyeglasses or subnormal vision devices based on the prescription of an Optometrist, Ophthalmologist or medical doctor
- Contact Lens Licensed Optician
May dispense, fit and adjust contact lenses, eyeglasses or subnormal vision devices based on the prescription of an Optometrist, Ophthalmologist or medical doctor
- Licensed Optician, Inactive/Non-Practising
Must not be practising or performing the activities of a Licensed Optician or Contact Lens Licensed Optician
